About Idebenone
What does all this have to do with skin care? Recently prevage idebenone has been shown (albeit only in a few small studies) to improve skin wrinkles. Not surprisingly and quite logically, some skin care companies decided that prevage idebenone analogs might do a similar or better job. But why conduct painstaking research developing new idebenone analogs optimal for skin rejuvenation. Why not take a "tried and true" existing analog, make it into a cream and tout as a new breakthrough. Lo and behold, idebenone creams are now available and actively promoted as anti-wrinkle remedies.

A 1995 study in the Journal of Transplantation compared the organ preserving effects of prevage and Idebenone. It's important to realize that free radicals that form in the skin in response to the sun's ultraviolet rays are largely responsible for wrinkling and other signs of aging. To fight these damaging molecules, cosmetic chemists developed this topical antioxidant that's even more powerful than natural antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. Results of a clinical trial were presented in February 2004 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. They wanted to find out which ingredient offered the best protection against free radicals. Well, it was idebenone that finished first against vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, kinetin, and alpha-lipoic acid. The benefits of this ingredient include shielding skin from environmental damage, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and reducing dryness and smoothing skin texture. |
We

best. Idebenone is closely related to CoQ10 in its structure. It can
replace Prevage in the process of cellular energy production and,
just as CoQ10, idebenone is also an antioxidant. There are some
important distinctions though. Prevage Idebenone is more
water-soluble than Prevage md; its cellular distribution and
antioxidant profile are somewhat different too. This makes idebenone
superior to Prevage md in neutralizing some types of free radicals
and inferior in fighting other types. Notably, Idebenone is more

ways. Unlike Prevage idebenone, even under the low oxygen conditions
that may occur periodically over a lifetime, Idebenone will serve as
a powerful mitochondrial free radical quencher, lessening the
ever-increasing mtDNA damage that occurs with age. Idebenone will
work even better than Co Q10 within the electron transport chain to
keep energy production high, even under hypoxic conditions. This is
especially critical to brain and heart cells that may be rapidly
damaged during low ATP production episodes that occur due to poor
tissue oxygenation. A variety of studies using brain cells (animal
and human) have shown Idebenone's ability to enhance brain structure
and function. These tests have demonstrated that Idebenone can
enhance serotonin production, even under far less than optimal
conditions, such as in patients with cerebrovascular dementia.

Idebenone is a powerful antioxidant, more so than Co Q10, and in
some studies is 30 to 100 times more effective, than vitamin E or
